Our Sea Vegetables
Alaria
(Certified Organic & Raw)
Similar to wakame biologically and nutritionally, with a black or dark-green color. A more wild, yet delicate taste than cultivated wakame and needs longer cooking time. Our preferred sea vegetable for miso soup. Available in 2 oz. reclosable bag, or in bulk lots by the pound.
Bladderwrack
(Certified Organic & Raw)
Bladderwrack is common to cold northern oceans worldwide. It is a sea vegetable with several health benefits. Herbalists and supplement makers use bladderwrack for weight loss aids and thyroid stimulation. Bladderwrack is also a source of fucoidan, a polysaccharide known to scavenge heavy metals and radioisotopes throughout the body. It is available in bulk lots by the pound in whole leaf, coarse cut, or powder form.
Dulse
(Certified Organic & Raw)
Our most popular sea vegetable - with a soft, chewy texture, distinctive taste and a rich red color. Enjoy dulse as a snack, a colorful salad ingredient, tasty in soups, zesty when fried. Available in 2 oz. reclosable bags or in bulk lots by the pound. We also offer dulse granules in shakers or bulk lots by the pound and powder in bulk lots by the pound.
Dulse Flakes
(Certified Organic & Raw)
Produced from high quality selected organic dulse. Toss in salad, pour in soups, mix with pasta, sprinkle in stir-fries. Less expensive per ounce than whole dulse. Available in 4 oz. reclosable bags or in bulk lots by the pound.
Applewood Smoked Dulse
(not Certified Organic & Raw)
Dulse that's been gently and carefully smoked with native Maine applewood. Tender and tangy as a snack or ingredient. Smoked at 118° Fahrenheit. Available in 2 oz. reclosable bags or in bulk lots by the pound.
Digitata
(Certified Organic & Raw)
Digitata is a variety of kelp that grows prolifically in the subtidal waters of the North Atlantic. Although similar in nutritional content to our regular kelp, it tends to contain higher amounts of iodine, calcium and mannitol - a natural sugar molecule that gives digitata a slight sweetness. Available in 2 oz. reclosable bags or in bulk lots by the pound.
Kelp
(Certified Organic & Raw)
A thinner and more tender variety of Japanese kombu, light brown to dark green in color. Used, like kombu, in soup stocks, pan-fried for chips, stir-fried with carrots, etc. Available in 2 oz. reclosable bag, or in bulk lots by the pound.
Laver
(Certified Organic & Raw)
A purple/black, wild North Atlantic cousin to nori, enjoyed in the British Isles for centuries. Dry roasting brings out a nutty salty flavor. Crumble dry roasted laver over popcorn, soups, grains. Soaked laver is mixed with fat and rolled oats and fried into a breakfast bread in Scotland and Wales. Available in 1 oz. reclosable bags or in bulk lots by the pound. We also offer laver flakes in 3 oz. or 8 oz. bags.
Irish Moss Flakes
(not Certified Organic & Raw)
In Ireland, this short, bushy, red sea plant was traditionally boiled with milk and sugar to release the gelling agent (carrageen), then cooled to form a pudding, sometimes called Blancmange. The carrageen extracted from Irish moss is used world wide as a colloidal thickening agent in many foods and cosmetics. If you eat ice cream, you have already eaten this Irish moss extract. Available in 6 oz. reclosable bags or in bulk lots by the pound.
Sea Lettuce
(Certified Organic & Raw)
Sea lettuce is the "salad greens" of the sea vegetables. It is a leafy, vibrant dark green, with a distinctive flavor and aroma. This sea vegetable is good raw, but tends to have a slightly bitter taste when cooked, unless added to other ingredients. Sea lettuce is used worldwide in soups and roasted for garnishes. We offer whole-leaf sea lettuce in 0.75 oz. bags or in bulk lots by the pound. We also have sea lettuce flakes in bulk lots by the pound.
Chinese Sushi Nori
(Certified Organic - Toasted or Untoasted Raw)
A friend of ours visited a nori farm in China and brought back some excellent quality sheets. We would like to support the nori farmers of this village and provide you with a fine product that we have so far been unable to grow ourselves. The production and export of this nori involves no human rights abuse and to the best of our knowledge has no connection with the Chinese government. Our nori comes from the waters just south of Qingdoa (a few hundred miles north of Shanghai). All of our Chinese sushi nori comes in 50 or 100 sheet packs. The Toasted nori also comes in 7 sheet packs.
